WiP Episode 11

Pete and Ania recap their trip to Chattacon, where they got an interview with Todd Lockwood!!!

There’s some background noise but Todd’s a REALLY interesting guy to listen to, so it’s totally worth it. Meanwhile Jeff talks about his experience at the global game-jam, a 48 hour game design contest.

WiP Episode 10

The first episode of twenty-ten!

This is our year in review episode, inspired by Chris Burdett’s Blogpost: 2009, the Year I Got Serious (part one and two).

After we recorded the episode we figured it would only be appropriate to have Chris on the show for an interview.

We also talk about Artrage, the Spectrum deadline and crowd-sourcing.

WiP Episode 9

We’re trying a few new things this episode!

First off we’re joined by a gaggle of extremely talented illustrators from Crit-Bot: the email crit group I mentioned in the previous ep.

Aaron Miller

Marc Scheff

Mark Winters

Aaron and Marc give us a first hand account of Illuxcon, an illustration centered convention.

For our roundtable discussion, we discuss a question we got from Christopher Burdett:

“When dealing with an open ended art order how much weight do you give to time / money when it comes to limiting the scope of the art. Doing something simple and “good enough” that take less time and energy versus doing something super awesome and amazing over the top that involves more time and energy. Were do you find a balance point.

Example, say the assignment is “Evil Tornado, Wind monster causing much havoc” that’s all. You could go with a tornado knocking some trees around and a person running from it… all the way to leveling most of a castle and keep with dozens of people fleeing in terror. As an artist, how do you go about making these choices and how does $$$ and final product ( trading card vs half page book art) affect these choices?”

WiP Episode 8

The October episode is up! We talk a lot about some new illustration based social networks and some inspiring graphic design and photography blogs. Pete and Ania just finished a young adult book cover for simon and schuster, and I talk about setting up an email list with other illustrators for getting brutally honest critique on your work.

We’ve also got an interview with Emily Warren, a colorist for Marvel and a veteran con-goer.

WiP Episode 6!

Not sure why I keep putting exclamation marks at the end of the episode names…

Survival Guide to a few of the conventions coming up, Jeff’s first few weeks freelancing fulltime, plus an interview with Marc Scheff (dangermarc.com) about concept art, digital art making it’s way to fine artists and the Illustration Master Class 2009. It’s a good interview.

We mentioned the portraits Marc did using an iPhone app called Brushes:

WiP Episode 5!

We’re a little late this month due to some technical issues, but here it is!

We’ve got a theme running through this one: being selective about the jobs you take. We discuss a rant by Harlan Ellison, and we’ve got an interview with Ray Frenden about spec work. We also talk about some of the physical ramifications of over-working yourself.

WiP Episode 4!

Covered a pretty wide range of topics this time.  We’ve come across a few new resources for illustrators like http://artorder.blogspot.com and the ninja mountain podcast.  Also, Pete and I are still breaking down things we took away from Reverie.

Hope you enjoy it!

WiP Episode 3: Reverie

Pete and I wrap our Reverie experience on the last day of the event.  We’re totally wiped out by the time we sat down to record, but it was an incredible experience and I’m glad we got it recorded.

We were also able to rope Charlie Athanas into an interview.  He’s co-founder of the Devil’s Candy Store, and just a damn interesting guy to talk to.

We’ve got some minor audio problems for the first five minutes, but it gets better after that.

We’ll be back to the regular format next month!

WiP Episode 2

Hey all,

Episode two is up for your podcast consumption!  We covered a lot of topics in this one; Squarespace–an awesome WYSIWYG website editor that Ania, Pete and I are transitioning our sites over to, the ongoing Painter vs Photoshop debate, transitioning to full time with our guest Steve Belledin.

Good times had by all.

Next ep will probably be recorded at Reverie in Dallas, which Pete and I will both be attending, so keep an eye out for that one in early April.

In the meantime, as always we want your feedback! Email us at wippodcast@gmail.com with questions and comments.  If you emailed us before and didn’t hear your question, we’ll get back to you in one way or another.

By the way–the episode is now in MP3 format by popular demand
